Hakihiiwe is an indigenous artist from the Yanomami community Pori Pori whose practice spans drawings, monotypes and paintings. Hakihiiwe incorporates in his people’s knowledge repertoire in his works, from the medicinal properties of forest plants to ancestral lore of animals and spirits that inhabit it, shamanic songs and body painting. The artist’s delicate artistic language employs straight lines and organic curves, dots, circles, triangles, zigzags, arches and crosses, all in plant-based paints and Amazonian fiber paper. Heir to a tradition of abstract pictorialism, his practice entertains a constant dialog with amerindian cosmologies.
