Tiago Carneiro da Cunha’s paintings deal with cosmic clashes between forces of nature and hybrid, monstrous beings. The artist usually organizes the action of his compositions always on the margins, leaving the center free for the circulation of representations of nebulae, beams of light and energy vortices. The thick oil paint impasto with which the artist executes his forms imprints a sense of accumulated matter and manual craftsmanship that refers to sculpture, fundamental in the his practice since the beginning of his career. Drawing on the iconography of B-movies, comic books and video games, his works combine the visual vocabulary of animation with a wry sense of humor. The works combine the critical impulse of parody and caricature with an openly playful dimension of creating supernatural characters and scenes.
